At Canopy Tours your safety is our number one priority. We have a high standard of equipment and well trained experienced guides that are with you during your ziplining experience to keep you safe. We have safely escorted over 65,000 people through the Canopy Tour since 2012 and visitors often tell us the New Zealand zipline safety systems we have in place help them to relax and enjoy the forest Canopy Tour.
Almost anyone can come on a Canopy Tour, but to ensure your safety we do have some weight and age restrictions, please read these below.
The maximum weight for the Canopy Tour is 120kg. There is no minimum weight, however we do need to know at the time of booking if any children weigh less than 35kg.
You must be at least 6 years old to come on a Canopy Tour. There is no upper age limit, in fact we have had many people come on a Canopy Tour who were in their 90’s!
Our zipline guides
A great safety culture is important to us at Canopy Tours, all of our kiwi guides are passionate people from various backgrounds, and many being qualified outdoors instructors that bring a huge range of skills and experience.
When a new guide starts at Canopy Tours they are put through a rigorous training program which takes several weeks before they start a guiding apprenticeship with one of our senior guides. Training, reviews and assessments are on-going for all staff no matter how long they have been in the business. We have a huge mixture of guides – our most experienced have safely escorted over 12,000 people each through the Canopy Tour so there is a huge amount of experience within our ranks!
The Canopy Tour has been designed so that you play a passive role, our zipline guides will take care of all of your safety, this includes clipping you on and off all of our ziplines as well as slowing you down as you arrive into the tree platforms. In fact our golden rule at Canopy Tours is ‘don’t touch anything metal’ as the guides will look after this for you!
The Tour Infrastructure and Equipment
One of the company founders, Andrew Blackford, is a structural engineer so you can be sure everything on the zipline course is checked over with a fine tooth comb during regular maintenance and engineering checks.
In addition to this we source all of our equipment like harnesses, helmets, carabiners and zipline trolleys from the top suppliers around the world!
Rotorua Canopy Tours Certifications
The New Zealand Adventure Activity Regulations came into effect in 2010 of which Rotorua Canopy Tours is registered, audited and certified. You can view the register of New Zealand Adventure Activities here and check our current safety audit status (and any other adventure tourism businesses in New Zealand you are thinking of visiting).
We like to think of ourselves as leaders in the industry when it comes to our systems, culture and policies for zipline safety. Don’t just take it from us, check out what some of our customers have to say on Trip Advisor!
“Safety was excellent, I felt totally safe throughout the activity and there was never a time when we weren’t secured to the lines throughout the tree tops” – Quote from Trip Advisor, 2015.
