A bit about Rotorua Canopy Tours

Rotorua Canopy Tour opened its doors on 17th August 2012 with just 4 part-time staff. The company has quickly grown in size and now has over summer 35 staff throughout busy periods making the place tick. Over 100,000 people have now been on the 3-hour adventure and the demand just continues to grow. The company has a fantastic reputation in the tourism industry and was awarded the supreme award at the New Zealand Tourism Awards in 2016!

The RCT team

The Canopy Tours team is vibrant and diverse. Our guides all have varied backgrounds and range in age from 20 to 40 – most being mid 20’s. Most of our guides are outdoors instructors and if not they are rock climbing, kayaking and mountain biking fanatics. The team does not only consist of guides –  reservations staff, operational managers and the marketing team also play a large role in the success of the business. The guiding job

As a guide your job is essentially about three things – safety, interpretation and customer service. Essentially, you will be escorting a group of 10 people on their three hour zipline adventure safely and bringing the environment to life through your interpretation.
You won’t deliver a word by word script, you’ll get guidance and a full interpretation manual with key themes although you will be expected add your creative flair and personality to your tours and we believe that is vital to delivering a non-gimmicky eco-tourism experience.

Each guide will take 2 – 3 tours per day with their guiding partner. We mix up who you are guiding with each day so you don’t get sick of anyone.

Who are we looking for?

At Rotorua Canopy Tours we are all about delivering a premium eco-tourism experience and to do that we require the best guides in the outdoors industry.

Our guides are not show off’s or ego maniacs – we don’t want those types. They are professional, humble outdoors people with excellent technical ability but equally important engaging personalities who are proud to be in the outdoors sharing it with people from all walks of life.

Ideally you’ll have experience in the outdoors guiding groups of people, outdoor qualifications (although not essential), you’ll have a good strong understanding of native NZ flora and fauna and a love and experience of the New Zealand outdoors that you can share with your customers.

We need a mixture of full time permanent and fixed term staff and we would happily meet you if you were also after casual weekend work year-round also.

Joining the team

Guides are needed to join our team this season. Start date will be 20th November 2017, If you are available earlier please mention this in your application.

When you come onboard at Rotorua Canopy Tours you’ll be buddied up with a senior staff member to ensure your transition and introduction into the company is seamless and easy for you.

Your first couple of weeks at Canopy Tours will involve intensive training in the forest. Here you will learn the technical skills required to become a Canopy Tours guide. Training is not all physical though; you will also be learning about the forest and what lives there, the conservation work we do, the area and its history. We want you to be able to answer any questions your customers have from your very first day you start guiding.

You’ll learn a lot in the initial 2 weeks so be prepared. Once you have been signed off and assessed as fully competent you’ll be on your way delivering world class eco-tourism to people from all over the world.rotorua-canopy-tours-team

The Pay

You can’t attract the best without paying for it and we pay as good, if not better than any tourism company! Rest assured we pay well if you are keen to work. If you have adequate prior experience we’ll recognize that also.

Ongoing training and conservation

We have monthly training sessions, monthly full team meetings and the opportunity to work in the forest on our conservation programme. The staff that get themselves involved in this find it very fulfilling. Conservation is all part of the Canopy Tours story – click here to learn a more.

Staff functions

We have functions every 4 months and the staff are involved in the planning of it. We shut the business down early and head out on an adventure together. The activities are always fun and range from Whitewater rafting with River Rats to cruising on lake Taupo with Chris Jolly.kawarau-jet-rotorua

Relocating to Rotorua

Rotorua has a bit of everything. If you are seeking adventure there is great mountain biking, hiking and kayaking. Rotorua district has 18 lakes and is only an hour to the coast if you are into surfing.

Accommodation can be tricky when moving to a new place, Canopy Tours have staff accommodation available, a short walk from work for those who need it. Please ask if you are interested in staff accommodation as we have a limited number of rooms available.
